A brief know – how about Stainless Steel Fiber

Industrial Floors are subjected to various types of loading. There will be material handling equipment, heavy rack posts, heavy tanks and many other such heavy processing machines. The floors in these industries need to cater to certain strict standards and it should also be hygienic apart from strength and toughness if it’s related to food industry and so steel fibers come into picture.

The composition of steel fibers includes Carbon steel and stainless steel. In this blog we would focus on stainless steel fiber.

Stainless steel fibres are filaments of wire deformed and cut to lengths. These fibres are used in SFRC. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is made up of hydraulic cements containing fine and granular aggregate and discontinuous distinct steel fibres. These stainless steel fibers that are used for strengthening the concrete are short, discrete length of steel having a certain aspect ratio that are sufficiently small  so that it can easily get dispersed in an unhardened concrete mixture using usual mixing procedures. The aspect ratio is determined by length to diameter ratio and varies from 20 to 100.

Many companies that offer Stainless steel fibers comply with ASTM A820. The ASTM A820 divides steel fibers into five different types and depends upon how they are made.

Type I – Cold drawn wire

Type II – Cut sheet

Type III – Melt extracted

Type IV –Mill cut

Type V – modified cold drawn wire

For concrete floors Type I, II and V are used.

Steel Fiber length

The length dimension of a steel fiber ranges from 6.4 mm to 76 mm while the diameter ranges from 0.25 mm to 0.75 mm. There is no such consent as to which fiber length is best but it does depend upon what the fiber is expected to do. If we want to have properties like ductility, residual strength or flexural toughness which helps to limit the widening of cracks after they have formed, then engineers prefer longer fibers. And where there is a need to prevent visible cracks short fibers are preferred as they result in high fiber counts and less distance between fibers.

It takes more than the right specification to make steel fiber reinforced structure. Length, effective diameter, deformation and dosage are the essential features that stainless steel fiber specification should cover. The fibers should be stored and covered well; it should be protected from snow and rain. If the packaged fibers are left outdoors the packaging can disintegrate and the fibers can rust. So these minor possibilities should be taken care of while handling the steel fibers.
